I couldn’t put this down. Steven Hauer's memoir hits hard at sixteen, a freak accident nearly cost him his life, and you feel every second of his fight to survive. The storytelling is raw and full of faith, and what struck me most was how he uses that near-death experience to ask bigger questions about purpose and resilience. More than a survival story it’s a reminder of how one moment changes everything.

One Inch Between Life and Death Updated and Revised Second Edition: A Walking Miracle by Steven A Hauer is a concise yet powerful memoir centered on survival, faith, and purpose.
In 1985, during a hunting trip in New Prague, Minnesota, Hauer survived a gunshot wound that he believes missed his heart by just one inch. That split second became the defining pivot point of his life. The book does not dwell solely on the dramatic moment in the woods it focuses on the aftermath: recovery, fear, spiritual questioning, and the long emotional road back to stability.
At just 70 pages, this updated and revised second edition reads as a reflective testimony rather than an extended narrative. Hauer frames his survival as divine intervention, describing himself as a “walking miracle.” The spiritual lens shapes the memoir’s tone, offering encouragement to readers who have faced trauma, crisis, or moments that could have ended differently.
The strength of the book lies in its simplicity and sincerity. It speaks directly to readers who wrestle with questions like “Why am I still here?” or “What do I do with this second chance?” Rather than offering abstract theology, Hauer shares personal struggle and faith driven interpretation.
One Inch Between Life and Death will resonate most with readers drawn to Christian testimony, survival memoirs, and stories of life redefined after near death experiences. Its central message is clear: purpose can emerge from the moment that nearly took everything.—Micheal Drew 5.0 out of 5 stars March 3, 2026
I don't usually read memoirs. I tend to stick to fiction because real life can be heavy enough without adding someone else's pain to it. But something about this title stopped me completely and I am so grateful it did.
Steven Hauer writes with a rawness and honesty that you simply cannot fake. This isn't a polished Hollywood survival story with a neat bow tied at the end. It's messy and frightening and deeply human. The way he describes those moments after the bullet, the fear, the confusion, the slow and painful process of putting himself back together, felt so real I had to put the book down several times just to breathe.
What moved me most was his faith. He never forces it on you or preaches. He simply shares what carried him through the darkest moments of his life and somehow that quiet conviction is more powerful than anything loud could ever be.
The revised edition adds layers that make an already profound story even richer.
I finished this book sitting in my car in a parking lot crying in a way I hadn't in years. Not from sadness, from recognition. From that deep human feeling of yes, me too, I understand.
Read this one slowly. It deserves that.—Mcrea Ellington 5.0 out of 5 stars March 9, 2026
